Dentures are designed to restore your smile and confidence, and countless generations of patients have benefitted from these tried-and-true restorations. That said, if you wear dentures and you’ve noticed an unpleasant odor at some point, you might be wondering what exactly is going on. You should know that many denture wearers experience this, and it’s usually both preventable and treatable with the right approach! Here’s what you need to know.

Why Do My Dentures Smell Bad?

Dentures themselves do not naturally produce an odor, but rather, it’s the bacteria on them that do. When food particles and plaque build up on your dentures, they create the perfect environment for odor-causing bacteria to thrive. Tiny food particles can also get stuck underneath or around your dentures, especially if they don’t fit perfectly. Over time, these particles can decompose and create a foul odor or taste in your mouth.

Keeping your dentures in for long periods of time tends to give these bacteria the chance to multiply. Dry mouth is also a factor that’s in play. Your saliva washes away bacteria, and if you suffer from dry mouth, bacteria can grow more easily and increase your risk of odor.

Keeping Your Dentures Clean & Odorless

The best way to prevent denture odor is through consistent daily care. Here are some tips and habits to keep in mind:

  • Brush your dentures daily using a soft-bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive denture cleaner. Avoid regular toothpaste since it can be too harsh.
  • Soaking dentures overnight in a denture-cleansing solution also helps to kill odor-causing bacteria. Be sure to always rinse them before putting them back in your mouth.
  • Even if you wear dentures, it’s still important to keep your mouth clean by brushing your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth.
  • Remove and rinse your dentures after snacks and meals to prevent food from building up.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, since this can help to prevent dry mouth by encouraging your natural flow of saliva.

If you’re cleaning your dentures properly, but you still notice a persistent odor, you should let your dentist know since it might indicate an issue with your dentures—or an issue with your dental health. That said, with proper care and the right habits, you should be able to keep your dentures fresh, functional, and a happy part of your smile!
