What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown – at its core – is a small, durable cap that fits over a damaged tooth. Once placed by a dentist, it prevents further harm to the treatment site and reduces the risk of oral issues. The cap can also be made from varied materials, ranging from gold and porcelain to porcelain fused to metal (PFM) and zirconia.

Due to their design, the best candidates for dental crowns have one (or more) of the following traits:

  • Highly Fractured or Decayed Teeth
  • An Existing-yet-Damaged Dental Crown
  • Large & Failing Dental Fillings
  • A Root-Canal-Treated Tooth
  • Bite Problems That Need Correction

The Dental Crown Process

To receive a dental crown, you must attend two dental visits. The first session prepares your tooth for its cap, while the second one places the actual restoration sometime later.

Dr. Lavery follows several steps for the initial visit. For starters, he numbs your mouth with an anesthetic; this ensures the “prep work” won’t hurt you. He then removes any old fillings from the treatment site, rebuilding your tooth’s missing structure as necessary. What follows is the shaving of your enamel – a move that ensures your tooth has room for the crown. After finishing this removal, Dr. Lavery takes an impression of your prepped tooth that lets workers craft your restoration.

You’ll attend the second visit roughly two to three weeks later. At that time, our team will place your dental crown and ensure it fits your tooth well. (Such work will be quick; we’ll just confirm your restoration is comfortable, blends well, etc.) We’ll then cement the crown, polish it, and let you enjoy your now-strengthened tooth.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Once you have a dental crown, you’ll enjoy the following perks:

  • High Versatility – Since they can treat chips, cracks, cavities, and more, dental crowns are highly versatile and have a wide range of uses.
  • A Stronger Smile – Dental both protect your teeth and withstand your bite, as they consist of durable materials. The caps can thus help you avoid root canals or tooth extractions later.
  • Beautiful Looks – If you receive a tooth-colored crown, it’ll blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile. Your treatment results will thus look incredibly lifelike.
  • Enduring Results – The average dental crown lasts about 5-15 years. That said, this lifespan can reach 30 years or more if the cap is well-maintained!
